French President Emmanuel Macron Addresses Congress

French President Emmanuel Macron told a Joint Session of Congress that the 21st Century has brought new threats and challenges to the world. Macron said civilized nations are living in a time of anger and fear. He noted that "anger only freezes and weakens us."

Macron warned against isolationism and said the U.S. and Europe must face new global threats together. Macron pointed out that the U.S. and France are part of the coalition that is fighting ISIS in Syria adding that American and French forces have fought "shoulder-to-shoulder" on many battlefields for more than two-hundred years.

“France has participated with heart in hand in the story of this great nation for the very beginning," he said. "Our two nations are rooted in the same soil”

Macron broke with President Donald Trump's position on dealing with global climate change and warned about destroying the planet. Macron urged President Trump to rejoin the Paris climate change accord. He said world leaders have an obligation to leave a better planet for future generations.

"I believe in building a planet for our children that is still inhabitable in 25 years," he said. "Some people think that securing industries and current jobs is more important than climate change ... I hear this concern, but we must find a smooth transition."

Macron warned against abandoned the Iran Nuclear Deal, which has been something Trump has promised to do.

"We should not abandon it if we don't have something more substantial instead. That is my position,"

Macron also warned about a "virus of fake news" and said it exposes citizens to irrational fear.

"Without reason, without proof, there is no real democracy, because democracy is about true choices and rational decisions."
