Gun Rights Advocates: Universal Background Checks are Irrelevant

Democrats are coming after your guns again with yet another push for universal background checks.

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, shot in the head in 2011, helped introduce the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 alongside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California Congressman Mike Thompson.

“Stopping gun violence takes courage, the courage to do what's right, the courage for new ideas,” said Giffords.

Critics however, call Democrats' efforts a lost cause.

“The guy who shot Giffords passed a background check,” says Michael Hammond, legislative counsel for Gun Owners of America.  “They were going to roll it out on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, but a background check would have been irrelevant to him.”

Last year's Parkland High School shooter also passed a background check in Florida before killing 17.

“Why are they so obsessed with background checks?  I guess it's because like a dog returning to its own vomit, they've become obsessed with the same old bromides even though they're clearly irrelevant.”

GOA is instead pushing for reciprocity introduced by Texas Senator John Cornyn.  It would allow gun owners to carry their weapon in other states with similar conceal carry laws.

“We'recommitted to try to pass this into law, not just introduce and raise money off of it,” says Hammond.
