Only half of American adults know the true meaning of Memorial Day

As we take a moment to remember those that gave their lives defending our country, some are wondering if we have lost the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Polling shows only half of American adults can actually define the true purpose of Memorial Day. Something that dismays former Army Sgt. Brian Ishmael, now with the University of Phoenix.

“That’s a tough pill to swallow,” he told KTRH News.

Ishmael says there are multiple ways you can turn this trend around.

“You could go to a local cemetery; a lot of them hold Memorial Day tributes, and you could attend one of those. You could also do a flag planting or wreath laying, something like that,” Ishmael explained.

Every year the University of Phoenix plants ten thousand flags as a tribute to the men and women of the military who lost their lives for us.
