The political controversy that has surrounded Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen has come to a head, with Bonnen making the decision not to run for re-election next year. That means the position of Speaker is going to be open as well.
"Since Friday, I have had numerous conversations with Members who care deeply about the Texas House, and I respect the manner in which they have handled this entire situation. After much prayer, consultation, and thoughtful consideration with my family, it is clear that I can no longer seek re-election as State Representative of District 25, and subsequently, as Speaker of the House. I care deeply about this body and the work we have accomplished over the years, namely, the outstanding success we achieved in the 86th Legislature. My below colleagues have made clear that it is in the best interest of both myself and the House to move on, and I thank them for the respectful and thoughtful way in which they have convinced me to do so."
The statement comes after more than 30 House Republicans had either called for the speaker's resignation or had stated they no longer supported him following the release of a secretly recorded conversation between Speaker Bonnen and a conservative activist Michael Quinn Sullivan of the group Empower Texans.
Once the tape came out, State Representative Steve Toth told Jimmy Barrett on his afternoon show on KPRC that Bonnen should resign for suggesting there were some Republicans he could target.
“He clearly stated that if you go after these Republicans that I don't like, I will give you press credentials,” said Thoth. “It's within his power. Is it ethical? No.”
“Dennis needs to appoint a new Speaker Pro-Tem, then he needs to do the selfless thing and step down.”
