Texas Law Would Override Federal Law

Republicans in Texas are looking to pass a bill that would allow the state to ignore federal law and court rulings.

It was filed by State Rep. Cecil Bell, who represents a district north of Houston.

The Texas Sovereignty Act allows for overriding federal laws through the same process as passing a bill.

Similar legislation has been tried unsuccessfully in the past, as a way for conservative state lawmakers to ban same-sex marriage.
