A member of the United States men’s fencing team took a knee during the Star-Spangled Banner at the Pan American Games in Peru over the weekend
Race Imboden, an Olympic medalist and member of the U.S. men’s foil team, took a knee after his team won the gold at the games. He also took to social media to say how ashamed he is of the United States.
Mark Jones, vice president of communications for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, sent out a statement noting that Imboden violated the rules of the games with his protest against the United States.
“We respect his rights to express his viewpoints, but we are disappointed that he chose not to honor his commitment. Our leadership are reviewing what consequences may result,” Jones said.
