AOC released her outline for the much talked about Green New Deal yesterday, and it’s everything we could have hoped for. And more. I haven’t laughed so hard at a piece of public policy in….well, forever. One thing you have to say about AOC, she’s so sincere, she doesn’t know she’s being funny.
This thing is comedy gold.
AOC, on the other hand, is perfectly sincere. Remember back in early January of 2019 when she was just beginning her life as a media darling, and she said that we were all gonna die in 12 years if we didn’t get rid of fossil fuels? She reminded me of a much less nuanced Al Gore then.
Her New Green Deal, though, it is going to save the planet in 10 years. In 10 years we will be “net-zero” greenhouse gas emissions. My questions are why is she doing this? How is she doing this? Does it really mean anything?
Let’s review the why. First, and most important, AOC is a socialist. She’s a proud socialist. She wants the government to control all and provide all. That’s what the 90% tax rate will do for you. Instead of you giving 1/10th to the church, the government (her new church) is going to allow YOU to keep 1/10th.
That sounds awesome.
The second reason why is that in order to achieve socialism, AOC needs to control the energy supply and transportation networks. Can’t have you making stuff or going places you want without the proper authorization!
The third reason she wants the Green New Deal is to fulfill the promises made by our old friend FDR in his New Deal.
Back in 1932 when FDR was running for President, the country was in a terrible depression. So, he offered a New Deal of a bunch of government programs designed to increase prices and employment (an economist FDR was NOT). Most historians and economists agree, that his meddling in the economy had the effect of making the Depression last a lot longer thant it would have.
As the country stayed mired in the Depression and entered the Second World War, FDR introduced a Second Bill of Rights in 1944. This Second Bill of Rights was something. Instead of restricting the ability of the government, this Second Bill of Rights defined how the government was going to control YOU.
The Second Bill of Rights guaranteed housing, a job, medical care, social security, education, and freedom from “unfair competition.”
Achieving this Second Bill of Rights has been a Democrat pipe dream for 75 years.
Enter AOC and most of the Democrat 2020 Presidential candidates and the Green New Deal. This is the vehicle to achieve The Dream!! Break out the second line! Pop the corks! We have a winner!
In fact, the Green New Deal offers the following:
- Meeting 100% of US energy demand through clean renewable sources by 2030
- Creating new, high wage jobs to replace all those jobs lost in the dirty energy field
- Social justice for about every group you can imagine including the rural and unhoused.
- A complete power and water transmission infrastructure overall
- The rebuilding of EVERY SINGLE BUILDING in the United States
- A rapid expansion of high speed rail to replace air travel
- The complete elimination of cow farts.
- High quality healthcare
- Free education for all
- Economic support for those unable or UNWILLING to work.
Seriously, can’t stop laughing. This resolution sounds like it was written by my high school drama club writing a Saturday Night Live skit.
Just for grins and giggles, what would a fully implemented Green New Deal actually look like? Well, Mark Jacobson and some really smart engineers at Stanford actually developed an outline to achieve 100% renewable energy generation in 2015.
According to Reason Magazine“[the plan requires] 335,000 onshore wind turbines; 154,000 offshore wind turbines; 75 million residential photovoltaic systems; 2.75 million commercial photovoltaic systems; 46,000 utility-scale photovoltaic facilities; 3,600 concentrated solar power facilities with onsite heat storage; and an extensive array of underground thermal storage facilities.
Assuming steep declines in the costs of each form of renewable electric power generation, just running the electrical grid using only renewable power would still cost roughly $7 trillion by 2030. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation calculated that the total cost of an earlier version of Jacobson's scheme would amount to $13 trillion. And based on how fast it has taken to install energy generation infrastructure in the past, Jacobson's repowering plan would require a sustained installation rate that is more than 14 times the U.S. average over the last 55 years and more than six times the peak rate.
And none of this will make even a single degree of difference in global temperatures. Even the UN says that.
Which gets me to my final question—Does all this hot air actually mean anything?
We already know it won’t solve a problem that doesn’t exist. And the resolution that AOC introduced is non-binding. In other words, if it passes, the cows can continue to fart.
Nancy Pelosi decided to get serious about climate change; she revived the House Subcommittee on Climate Change. It hasn’t been in action since 2012 or so. Fancy Nancy announced the 9 Democrats who would be on that subcommittee, and you know what? AOC isn’t on it. In fact, those 9 Democrats received $200,000 from the fossil fuels lobby in the last election cycle.
Dead dinosaur power isn’t going anywhere. Americans will still be able to cook their delicious steaks and fartless chickens with the bright flame of freedom (and natural gas!).
