Fact Check: Rep Omar Compared US Military to Al-Qaeda

You may have recently read online somewhere (blogs, social medial, a forwarded email from your Aunt Patty, etc) that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and her far-left “Squad,” praised al Qaeda.

Technically, this isn't accurate. Rep Omar has, in the past, tried to grant clemency to ISIS terrorists and tried to change the law so that the family members of martyred terrorists can receive life insurance payouts, but she never specifically praised Al Qaeda.

However, Omar once appeared for an the interview on a local Minnesota television program to discuss U.S. foreign policy. During the interview she claimed America was responsible for acts of terrorism like the Westgate shopping mall terror attack that took place in Nairobi, Kenya by the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab. 71 people were killed in that attack and most of them were innocent civilians.

Omar also compared radical Islamic terror and the US military when she said terrorism is much like "the violence that is done [by] the West."

During the interview she claimed the U.S. and other countries had "legitimized," extremist violence.

She also complained over the fact that American Muslims are expected to denounce acts of Islamic terrorism and she mocked Americans who were scared of terror groups like al Qaeda while describing her experiences taking a college course on terrorism. She laughed at the thought of her professor being more scared of al Qaeda than the US Army.

Omar's remarks can be seen at the 17:00 minute mark of the following video.
