Here in Southeast Texas the law enforcement community has been on edge over news that our local political leaders are trying to free more criminals from Harris County Jail during the coronavirus pandemic.
A little over a week ago Harris County Administrative Judge Herb Ritchie issued a general order bond requiring the immediate release of any defendants booked into the jail on any of the 18 nonviolent state jail felonies.
As this was happening Judge DaSean Jones freed murder suspect David Cruz, using the prevention of spreading the coronavirus as his excuse for freeing the inmate.
More recently Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo made efforts to free even more crinals, some of them violent, but the move was halted by Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
With all the recently freed inmates now getting comfortable in our local community, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has a plan to stop an upcoming possible crime spree as a result of this move: he's asking them to "Chill".
That's right! When trouble is at your doorstep Mayor Turner is using the "chill" strategy.
