REVIEW: Theater Under The Stars presents Disney's The Little Mermaid

If you are looking for something to break the typical holiday events with the family then look no further than Theater Under The Stars production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. This production is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for fans of all ages. From the incredibly talented cast to some seriously show-stopping numbers Tuts's The Little Mermaid truly has something for everyone. 

This production is packed with local talent and really ticks all the Broadway boxes if you ask me. Despite this production's lack of success on Broadway when it first came out on the scene many years back, TUTS has corrected its original flaws to really bring something fun and beautiful to Houston. Returning to the stage in the role of Ariel is the extremely talented Delphi Borich who is truly the embodiment of this character. She brings whimsy and innocence to her performance on the stage and manages to stun with a truly Disney-esque voice. If I closed my eyes I would almost believe I was watching the movie production of the show when she sings. Christine Wells dominates the stage in the role of Ursula and brings the looks, bravado, and voice required to command that villainous role and bring her to life. Carla Woods as the lovable but uptight Sebastian brings perfect comedic timing to the show. Believe me when I say your kids will go crazy for this number because even as an adult it is hard to hide the awe that you feel when this is happening. Now it's not just the ladies bringing their A-game to the show. Derrick Davis is fierce as King Triton. His deep baritone voice is perfect for this role and when he speaks you know he is truly the king of the sea. Noah Ricketts as Prince Eric is a great fit opposite of our Ariel and brings the needed charm to this handsome prince.  

Now if I haven't sold you on the casting alone, trust me when I say, the set design on this show will knock your socks off. From the grand King Titans thrown to Prince Eric's ship to Ursula's underworld TUTS has spared no expense on this show. They use everything from projection to black lights to mind-boggling costumes to really breathe life into this show and it works every step of the way. Just as how many big Broadway productions can dazzle the audience with their special effects, TUTS does just that with The Little Mermaid and they truly make the bottom of the ocean the exciting place you hope it will be. From sparkling costumes with glitter and lights to long flowing mermaid skirts this show is a feast for your senses.

At the end of the day, I can't say enough good things about this show.
