Coronavirus Pandemic Continues to Hit U.S. Supply Chains

Some Texans in parts of the state continue to deal with shortages of medical supplies, toilet paper, and cleaning products. Beyond the grocery store, the extended economic shutdown is also causing problems for global supply chains.

Sam Houston State University Supply Chain Professor Dr. Jason Riley says the Coronavirus pandemic will cause problems for consumers looking to buy all types of products in 2020.

“Computers to cell phones have very elaborate, elongated supply chains,” Riley told KTRH. “Those are going to be affected for months if not even years to come. Apple iPhone is an example. The raw materials come from 31 different countries.”

Riley says the impact of the outbreak is rippling through all types of industries. A new survey by the Arizona-based Institute for Supply Management reports almost all U.S. companies have or will be negatively impacted as a result of health emergency. Riley anticipates many companies will have to revise and revamp how and where they get their supply.
