7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Reported

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake was reported in Vanuatu on Tuesday (December 17), according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered in Port-Vila at a depth of 57.1 kilometers (about 35.5 miles). The USGS said it received 33 reports of people having felt the earthquake at the time of publication.

The Vanuatu earthquake was reported days after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in California on Saturday (December 15), according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered in Petrolia at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles).

Several earthquakes have been reported in Petrolia in recent weeks, most notably a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on December 5, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Petrolia at a depth of 0.6 kilometers (about 0.37 miles).

A tsunami warning was issued for the San Francisco Bay Area by the National Weather Service following the earthquake report. “Evacuation is recommended. Move to high ground or inland,” the weather service’s advisory system reads," NWS said via the New York Post.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in Chile on Friday (December 13), according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Molina at a depth of 110.6 kilometers (about 68.7 miles).

The Chile earthquake was reported days after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was reported in Nevada on Monday (December 9), according to the United States Geological Survey.
