Deadly Officer Involved Shooting Caps Off Violent Weekend in Houston

A downtown disturbance spiraled into violence Sunday night when a man in crisis pulled a knife and stabbed an HPD officer, forcing another officer to shoot and kill him on the street outside a CVS. Police say the encounter began inside the store on Milam, where officers walked the disruptive man outside before he suddenly turned aggressive. The suspect died at the scene. Houston Mayor John Whitmire spoke at the scene.

The wounded officer was rushed to Memorial Hermann and is expected to be OK, according to union officials. Mayor John Whitmire showed up at the hospital and called it troubling to see two officer-involved shootings in back-to-back nights. Detectives say the suspect had a criminal record and are still piecing together what led to the attack.

This was just the latest violent incident in the Houston area this weekend. Another HPD cop is recovering after he was shot in a road rage incident on Saturday while driving to work. Three people were detained in that case.

One of those people had bond set at $60K. It was not clear if Homero Reyes knew the person he was shooting at was a police officer. Reyes has since been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.

Elsewhere, one woman was killed and five others hurt at a party shooting late Friday night. All told across Houston four people were killed, and seven others wounded.
