Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Sharia-friendly Democrat Congressional Rep from Minnesota, once attempted to win leniency for a group of men who signed up to join ISIS.
The whole story stems back to an incident in 2016 when Omar asked Judge Michael Davis to help Abdirahman Yasin Daud, a man who was recently arrested with others for attempting to join ISIS. In total, there were nine Somali-Americans accused of this crime, which is probably why Rep Omar was sympathetic towards them - she's a Somali-American and she frequently plays into identity politics to please her core constituents, even when it means making questionable decisions.
Daud was arrested for trying to purchase fake passports in an attempt to travel to Syria. After reaching Syria, he planned to join the Islamic State, a terror group who openly practices slavery, torture, rape, murder and a slew of other heinous crimes against humanity. Federal prosecutors wanted Daud serve 30 years in a federal prison with a lifetime of supervised release. Rep Omar felt differently.
At the time, Omar was still a Minnesota state lawmaker. She asked Judge Davis to give "compassion" to the men because apparently she didn't think joining a death cult was a big deal.
Rep Omar wrote to Judge Davis:
The best deterrent to fanaticism is a system of compassion. We must alter our attitude and approach; if we truly want to affect change, we should refocus our efforts on inclusion and rehabilitation. A long-term prison sentence for one who chose violence to combat direct marginalization is a statement that our justice system misunderstands the guilty. She sent a total of 13 letters begging Judge Davis to forgive these ISIS-wannabes.
But Judge Davis wasn't having it - he sentenced Daud to 30 years in federal prison anyway. The Islamic-extremist was found guilty of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiracy to commit murder outside the U.S.
There's nothing honorable about trying to join ISIS. They murder, rape children, and torture the people who they capture.
Once again, the Democrats are on the wrong side of history.
