Remember all those fun Disney cartoons you enjoyed watching as a young child?
It turns out they were racist & you might be racist for enjoying them.
Disney has added disclaimers to classic films on its streaming service to warn viewers that some scenes contain ānegative depictionsā and āmistreatment of people or cultures.ā
āThese stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,ā says the 12-second disclaimer, which cannot be skipped.
The films include āDumboā from 1941, āPeter Panā from 1953, āSwiss Family Robinsonā from 1960, and āThe Aristocatsā from 1970. The disclaimer also directs viewers to a website titled āStories Matter,ā which says, āBecause happily ever after doesnāt just happen.ā
āAs part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures,ā the site says. āWe canāt change the past, but we can acknowledge it, learn from it and move forward together to create a tomorrow that today can only dream of.ā
